What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national scheme for people with permanent and significant disability that provides funding for supports and services they need. The NDIS is run by National Disability Insurance Agency.

The NDIS funds a range of services such as Accommodation, Flexible Support, Allied Health
and Community Access – you choose when where and how to receive these supports.

Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few things

1.  Residency – You need to Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand
citizen who holds a Special Category Visa
2.  Age – You must be under 65 years of age during the time of your application
3.  Disability – You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your day
to day living
4.  Location – You need to be in an area where the scheme is already rolled out
5. Early intervention – You may be eligible if early intervention would improve your
child’s functioning.

HOW TO ACCESS THE NDIS?

STEP 1. DETERMINE IF YOU'RE ELIGIBLE.

The first step in accessing the NDIS is to check your eligibility for its support. Your location, age, and whether you meet the requirements for disability or early intervention support all contribute to your eligibility. You can also check your eligibility by following the questions available on the NDIS website using the Eligibility Checklist.

STEP 2. APPLY FOR NDIS FUNDING.

If you meet the criteria for accessing the NDIS, you can apply to become a participant, by simply calling them and asking for an ‘Access Request’. You may need to include evidence of your disability when you apply. Examples of this include information on what your disability is, how long it will last and how it impacts your life. The NDIS website outlines the type of evidence you may need to provide.

STEP 3. CREATE A PLAN.

Your NDIS plan will be a written agreement as to the types of supports and services you will receive funding for. It’s important to go into your planning meeting well prepared. You should think about your immediate support needs and the long-term and short-term goals you want to achieve through your Plan. Try to be as specific as possible.

STEP 4. START ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS

Once approved, you can start to use your plan to help you to move towards achieving your goals. Depending on your plan, you can get help from your Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or Support Coordinator.
